New York City psychology professor Judy Kaplan has dedicated her career to understanding narcissists after a painful past with a man named Edward. When her twenty-two-year-old art student daughter Eva calls from Los Angeles to announce her sudden engagement to a doctor named Theo after a mere six weeks of dating, Judy panics. Convinced Theo exhibits textbook manipulative behaviors like love bombing, Judy and her colleague Diane immediately catch a flight to the West Coast to stage an intervention before the romance turns destructive.
Upon arrival, Judy aggressively confronts Eva with her clinical theories, only to be completely dismissed. Undeterred, the older women begin tracking Theo, capturing suspicious photographs of him with another woman and later discovering he owns a second mobile phone. Although Eva initially defends Theo, she eventually grows suspicious after spotting him with his former fiancé Simone and briefly calls off the engagement. However, after a chaotic hotel lobby scuffle involving the decoy phone plan goes hilariously wrong, Eva accuses her mother of interference and uninvites her from the upcoming wedding ceremony entirely.
